Hario V60 - the lawyer's best friend?

Lawyers love their coffee... or at least I do, and according to Legal Bizzle:-

"The law runs on coffee, from the trainee who needs to fuel their long hours and late nights, to the partner who needs a pick-me-up after a hard night entertaining clients. "*

Based on the lawyers I have worked with it's hard to argue that LB is wrong (although personally I cannot face coffee when hungover... in that situation tea with many sugars is the only liquid with which I want to be presented).

However, since moving to a smaller firm I have been faced with that least welcome of sights... not an espresso machine to be seen and only a giant tub of instant coffee granules in the kitchen.

There are solutions of course. Buy yourself a caffetiere (although they are a pain to clean and depending on who you believe the resulting coffee may be a bit on the fatal side). You could even buy yourself a coffee machine if you can put up with the rest of the office "popping in" to your office three times a day to chat and grab a cup of java.

Or you could pop out to a local coffee shop... and if you have a great independent one near you then perhaps you should do that and support them. My favourite is the excellent Bold Street Coffee, but unfortunately they are a train ride away in Liverpool, which is difficult to get away with during the working day. Otherwise there is the expense to factor into your budget and also the likelihood of less than great coffee.

On behalf of lawyers everywhere, I think I have found the perfect solution having just taken delivery of a Hario V60 coffee dripper. The Hario website is rather bizarre, but the dripper is listed on Amazon too with a rather better description.

The V60 is like a Japanese, ceramic version of the plastic filter cone my parents used to use to make coffee in our camper van when I was a kid. Only more of an icon of modern design.

You just add a filter paper and a scoop of coffee, put it on top of your favourite cup and add hot (not boiling) water. The mug fills with filter coffee (which tastes just as good as any filter machine I have ever used) in a few seconds. The filter and coffee go in the bin, a quick rinse and it can be locked away back in your desk draw for next time. If you want the low down on the perfect technique then check out this Coffee Geek post, but for me just pouring in the water seems to work.

The one cup version is fine for a mug of coffee (just top up the water twice) but there is also a bigger one.

I don't get any affiliate payments from Amazon or anything if you rush out and buy one, but if you are struggling for decent coffee in the office you won't regret shelling out for one of these.

At £16 they aren't cheap (although that won't buy you that many coffee shop Lattes), but there is also a cheaper plastic version around.

The ideal companion for the coffee starved lawyer!
